Top Ten Horror-Themed Urban Legends

Urban legends are tales that may or may not be true but have been retold for years. Most of them have different variations depending on the region where you live. For some of the most common, check out this list of the top ten horror-themed urban legends.

  1. Bunny Man Bridge – A local tale from Virginia that described the ghost of a axe-chopping serial killer who wears…wait for it… a bunny suit. Apparently this maniac was wearing a bunny suit when he was killed near an old railroad bridge. According to legend, if you stand under the bridge at midnight on Halloween, his ghost will get you.
  2. The Killer with a Hook – A common tale that is heard all the time is the crazed killer who has a hook for a hand. He apparently likes to stalk around camp sites or popular spots where teenagers go to make out. When a young couple who are doing just that leave and go home, they find a bloody hook hanging from the car door handle.
  3. The Hitchhiker – This tale has several different versions but all end the same. A car comes along and picks up a hitchhiker and takes them someplace, usually the hitcher’s home, and drops them off. Later, they find out the house is either abandoned or that the hitchhiker died years ago.
  4. Bloody Mary – Mary I, Queen of England was a bloody tyrant famous for ordering many executions and burning at the stake. The legend says that if you stand in front a mirror and chant “Bloody Mary” three times in a row, her bloody image will appear in the mirror. When that happens, she usually kills the person who summoned her.
  5. Backseat Killer – I know of two people who compulsively look in the backseat before they ever get in their car. The story tells of a serial killer who hides in the backseat, seemingly undetectable when you first get in the car. A few miles down the road, they pop up and go to work on you.
  6. Car With No Headlights – This is another legend that has a few variations. The two most common have it as either one driver or a gang of killers. They drive around at night with no headlights and shoot anyone who flashes their lights at them.
  7. Mothman Sightings – The Mothman is a mysterious entity that has glowing red eyes and large dark wings. There have been many recorded sightings over the decades. The being shows up right before some disaster, apparently heralding doom.
  8. Three Men and a Baby – This 1987 comedy starring Tom Selleck, Ted Dansen, and Steve Guttenberg spawned its own urban legend. In the film, there is a brief shot of what looks like a young boy standing in front of a window. The rumor was that a young boy had tragically died in the apartment used in the film and his ghost still haunted it.
  9. The Body Under the Bed – This legend tells of a family that spends the night in a motel. There is a bad odor in the room but no one can find the source. In the morning, the family searches the entire room and finds that underneath the bed they slept on was the corpse of a dead woman.
  10. “Aren’t You Glad You Didn’t Turn on the Lights?” – The story involves two college roommates, one who stays home to study and the other who goes out to party. The partier comes home late and goes to bed. In the morning, they find their roommate dead and written on the wall in blood are the words “Aren’t you glad you didn’t turn on the lights?”
