One of the masters of modern horror, Wes Craven has been producing frightening works of cinematic art since the ‘70s. With the release of Scream in 1996, he was even responsible for the modern resurgence in the popularity of horror films. For those new to the director, the following list details the Top 10 Wes Craven movies.

10. Scream 3 – In the third film of the trilogy, Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) has now relocated to California. But that doesn’t stop another psychotic killer dressed as Ghostface from finding her. Also stars David Arquette and Courtney Cox.
9. Red Eye – A terrorist (Cillian Murphy) forces a woman to help him with his plans during a red eye flight to Miami. Rachel McAdams is the unwitting victim, and Brian Cox plays her father. This one received strong critical reaction and made a nice profit at the box office.
8. The Hills Have Eyes Part II – Considered a camp classic by many, this film picks up after the events of the original film. Pluto (Michael Berryman) returns, and numerous characters get to have flashbacks (even the dog).
7. Wes Craven’s New Nightmare – Wes Craven and Heather Langenkamp play themselves in this story about Freddy Krueger looking to bust into the real word. Freddy is even credited as “himself” in the end credits (instead of actor Robert Englund).
6. The Last House on the Left – A couple of sweet girls are abducted, raped and murdered by a group of vicious cutthroats. When they get lost in the woods, the criminals have the misfortune to seek shelter in the home of one of the girls they recently killed. Can you say revenge?
5. Scream 2 – Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) and friends are off to college. When Ghostface shows up again and starting chopping down students, Sidney and friends must figure out who’s behind the killings and for what reason.
4. The Serpent and the Rainbow – A Harvard anthropologist journeys to Haiti to research a drug used in voodoo rituals. The longer he stays in Haiti, the worse the situation becomes. Starring Bill Pullman and Zakes Mokae.
3. The Hills Have Eyes – A vacationing family becomes stranded in the deserts of California. That would be bad enough, but then a group of cannibal mutants get onto their trail. Considered a cult classic, the film features Dee Wallace, Robert Houston and John Steadman.
2. Scream – The movie which helped to make horror cool again. While a killed dubbed Ghostface is running amok, the film gets in a lot of sly jokes about horror pop culture. Drew Barrymore has a cameo at the beginning, and actors such as Skeet Ulrich, Rose McGowan, Jamie Kennedy and Matthew Lillard.
1. A Nightmare on Elm Street – Freddy Kreuger (Robert Englund) was a serial killer of children who was burned alive by an angry mob. Now, years later, he’s returned to gain revenge my entering the dreams of his murderers’ children and ripping them to pieces. Johnny Depp has a role as a victim of Freddy.
