Top Ten Halloween Songs

Halloween is a great time to have a party and no party is complete with some rocking music. Some of them are some fun classics while others are just a ‘thrill’ to hear. If you are planning a Halloween-themed party and need some music, here is a list of the top ten Halloween songs.

  1. ‘Thriller” by Michael Jackson – Probably the most popular Halloween song ever by the King of Pop. And who doesn’t like the idea of dancing zombies? Plus at the end you have that great narration and laugh by the immortal Vincent Price.
  2. “Werewolves of London” by Warren Zevon – This is the perfect song for werewolf fans. The composition has a great upbeat rhythm and the lyrics are pretty darn funny. If you have a danc floor at your party, this is a good one to dance to while you howl at the moon.
  3. “The Monster Mash” by Bobby Boris Pickett – Pickett’s classic has been around since 1962. For the older generation (which unfortunately includes myself) this was the most popular Halloween song before Michael Jackson’s chart topper. The vocals sound as if Bela Lugosi is at the mike singing.
  4. “The Time Warp” from the Rocky Horror Picture Show – This is the best line-dancing song for Halloween. The haunting musical gives the listener instructions on how to do the dance (“Its just a jump to the left…”). Dedicated fans have the movie playing on the big screen while they follow the moves.
  5. “Love Potion Number 9” by The Clovers – The song really didn’t reach popularity until it was covered by The Searchers in 1965. A smooth melody song, it tells the story about a guy who goes to a gypsy for help finding love. Apparently you should never trust a gypsy because the guy ended up falling in love with everything.
  6. “Witchy Woman” by The Eagles – Don Henley wrote this song when he was sick with the flu. Still, it went on to be a hit back in 1972. The song is about a beautiful seductress of a woman but the narrator warns that she is wicked and nothing but trouble.
  7. “Black Magic Woman” by Santana – Fleetwood Mac first released this song in 1968 but when Santana covered it and added their own unique musical twist to it, it became a hit in 1970. This is another song about a seductive woman who has her man wrapped around her finger as if in a spell. Santana changed up the song by adding their trademark Latin rhythms to it.
  8. “Don’t Fear the Reaper” by Blue Oyster Cult – You can hear this song playing on just about any classic rock station any day of the week. But when Halloween comes along, it simply must be played. The song, after all, is about the Grim Reaper and you just don’t get any more Halloween than that.
  9. “Welcome to my Nightmare” by Alice Cooper – Make-up wearing, doll-beheading Alice Cooper puts on one creepy show. His song, released in 1975, was a perfect blend of eerie music and lyrics. In fact, the entire album of the same name is perfect mood music for the scariest night of the year.
  10. “I’m Your Boogieman” by White Zombie – The song was originally recorded by the 70’s disco-era band K.C. and the Sunshine band. Although popular at the time, it wasn’t until Rob Zombie’s band White Zombie covered it in 1996 that the song took on a much darker and heavier tone. Probably not the best song choice for kids unless you don’t mind them listening to metal.
