Top Ten Horror Anthology Movies
Some of the best in horror are not just films with one story. Some of them are anthologies that contain several short stories. Typically, some of the stories are better than others but for the top ten horror anthology movies, check out these titles:
- Tales from the Darkside: The Movie – This film was based on the television series from the 80’s. It teams up George Romero and Stephen King, both as co-writers. An old woman fattens up a boy to eat him and the boy, to delay his doom, tells her three stories.
- Nightmares – Originally made for television, the movie was deemed too intense and was picked up for theatrical release. It contained four stories that included a serial killer terrorizing a small town, a video game addict, a black truck chasing a priest, and a giant rat. It also includes early work with Emilio Estevez and Lance Henrickson.
- Twilight Zone: The Movie – The television series did not have blood and gore but featured weird and disturbing tales. The movie featured directors such as Steven Spielberg and John Landis. With remakes of three of the original episodes, it would have made Rod Serling proud.
- Tales from the Hood – Horror tales from an inner city point of view. The short stories are something of a parody but still portrayed in a serious manner. It used social issues such as gang violence and police brutality.
- Campfire Tales – If I were stranded in the woods at night, I would not tell scary stories just to pass the time. But that is what a group of teenagers do in this anthology flick. One of the stories includes the old “killer with a hook for a hand” theme.
- Creepshow – With a team like George Romero and Stephen King, how can you go wrong? Based on the old horror comics like Eerie, the movie contains some of the scariest, and humorous, stories. Stephen King even makes a memorable appearance.
- Tales from the Crypt – Probably one of the best, and earliest horror anthology movies. The British film was later used as a model for other horror anthology shows for both film and television. One of the best stories is about a woman who murders who husband and has to deal with a crazed Santa Claus.
- Trick ‘r Treat – A great movie that ties all of its stories together. You definitely find out that Halloween is not just about candy. Stories include a man who refuses to give candy to children, a legend of a school bus massacre, and a couple blows out a jack-o-lantern’s candle before midnight.
- Asylum – This British film has an ending with a great twist to it. When a man applies for the position of head doctor at an insane asylum, he is given a test. Through the stories, he has to find out which patient used to be the head doctor.
- Three…Extremes – This movie teams up three directors from Hong Kong, Japan, and Korea. The stories include and aging actress, twin circus performers who are jealous of one another, and a movie director held captive. It doesn’t have the crazy serial killer but is still haunting and suspenseful.
