Top Ten Holiday-Themed Horror Movies

Nothing brings out the holiday cheer than a good ol’ scary movie. There have been many horror flicks that have used various holidays as their backdrops. If you enjoy bloody Valentine candy or a leering Santa sharpening his ax, then these top ten holiday-themed horror movies are for you.

  1. My Bloody Valentine – Valentine’s Day should be about romance and giving gifts of chocolates. But apparently a crazy guy in a miner’s mask doesn’t like chocolate. So he makes it his mission to ruin everybody else’s Valentines.
  2. Black Christmas – Christmas time at a sorority house turns deadly when a killer makes threatening phone calls. But if the girls were scared talking on the phone, they get really scared when they find out the calls are coming from inside the house. The film features the sexy Olivia Hussey and a young Margot Kidder.
  3. Silent Night, Deadly Night – Talk about your screwed up kids, this film has one. A boy’s parents are murdered by a guy in a Santa suit. Later, the boy somehow relates people having sex to murder. A twisted connection is made in his mind and he dons a Santa costume for some bloody fun.
  4. Gremlins – Sure, little Gizmo is a cute critter. But what his brothers turn into after midnight are anything but. More of a black comedy that a real horror flick, there are still some great scenes.
  5. Jack Frost – Maybe not the best of the holiday horror films but hey, it has a rampaging snowman. A serial killer gets melted by acid and his genes combine with snow. Afterwards, the mutant snowman goes after everybody that ever did him wrong.
  6. Santa Claws – What is it about Santa Clause that makes people want to dress up like him and kill people? In this movie, a young man dressed as The Man In Red and stalks an actress. Features the beautiful B-movie actress Debbie Rochon.
  7. To All A Good Night – When the president of an all-girls school leaves for the holidays, the girls invite the boys over for a party. The mood is ruined, though, when a masked killer shows up. Everyone believes it is the ghost of a girl that dies during an initiation stunt gone wrong.
  8. Bloody New Year – A group of young people wreck their boat and swim for a deserted island. On the island, they find a hotel that is decorated for New Years. Things start happening in a weird way and the events are tied into a plane crash that happened years before.
  9. Don’t Open ‘Til Christmas – Not even Santa Claus is safe from serial killers. One is running around the streets of London killing men dressed as Santa. In a very Jack the Ripper-inspired theme, it is up to Scotland Yard to stop him.
  10. Nightmare Before Christmas – Okay, there is no blood and gore in this movie but you have to give it kudos for its creepy scenery and design. Tim Burton created a masterpiece by combining elements of Halloween and Christmas in this animated movie. Plus, the musical numbers are really great.
