Top 10 South Korea Horror Movies

Most people, when they think of Asian horror films, think of Japanese horror (or J-Horror). But South Korea has seen a surge in the recent years of horror flicks that have garnered much success in their home country and abroad. For some of the best tales or horror and suspense, here are the top ten South Korean horror movies.

  1. Tale of Two Sisters – A traumatized girl goes to live with her sister, father, and stepmother. After she arrives, strange occurrences start to happen and the two girls think the stepmother is to blame. This movie has so many twists that you will be continuously guessing what is really going on.
  2. Phone – After a reporter publishes an article on sex scandals, she starts being menaced by threatening phone calls. She changes her number but somehow the calls keep coming. She also discovers that anyone who has had her number has mysteriously died.
  3. The Quiet Family – A family buys a lodge up in the mountains in the hopes of starting a new business. Their first guests arrive but disaster happens when they turn up dead. Instead of reporting it, they avoid the bad press by hiding the bodies.
  4. Whispering Corridors – A school girl who has been dead for years is seen by a school teacher. Before she can report the incident, she is murdered. Three girls find the body but school officials try to keep it hushed.
  5. Wishing Stairs – Like a wishing well with bad side effects, a mysterious step grants anyone who steps on it their wish. When one girl wishes to beat out her dance competition, the other competitor turns up dead. Then the boy who liked her finds the step and wishes for her to come back.
  6. Muoi: The Legend of a Portrait – An author is trying to come up with a new idea for her book. She hears a story about a haunted portrait and goes to Vietnam to find it. There she discovers the vengeful spirit has escaped into her friend.
  7. Cello – A music teacher buys her autistic daughter a cello. The daughter takes to playing it but strange events keep occurring. Turns out there is a ghost haunting the teacher for her past events.
  8. Memento Mori – Two school girls start a romantic relationship and suffer being social outcasts because of it. When one of the girls tries to break it off, the other girl commits suicide. After her death, strange occurrences start to happen all over the school.
  9. The Uninvited – A man on a subway sees two girls he believes are asleep. Later when the news announces two girls found dead on the subway, the girls’ ghosts appear at the man’s dining table. Thus, events from his past start to come back to haunt him.
  10. Bunshinsaba – A group of girls use a Quija board to place a curse on some school bullies. Soon the bullies end up dead and there is a mysterious name on the school roll call for a girl that doesn’t exist. One of the girls ends up being possessed by the spirit of a girl murdered from years earlier.
