Most music videos are pretty basic, but every once in a while you’ll find one that really knocks your socks off. And in really special cases, you’ll find a music video which chops your socks off with a hatchet (with your feet still in them). I’m talking, of course, about the Top 10 scary music videos. Be warned: the majority of these are not for children or the faint of heart.
10. “Rabbit in Your Headlights” by Unkle – More disturbing than scary, this video features a madman wandering through a tunnel and getting mowed down by traffic again and again.
9. “Thriller” by Michael Jackson – Back before he was truly scary, Michael Jackson released this masterful throwback to the classic days of horror (with a twist). Great choreography, and it’s even got the voice of Vincent Price.
8. “Somebody’s Watching Me” by Rockwell – He only had one hit, but Rockwell knocked it out of the park with this musical ode to paranoia. I especially love the sinister mailman, and I’ve never looked at postal employees the same.
7. “Sheena is a Parasite” by The Horrors – At first it just seems like a girl doing some freaky dancing, but wait until giant fleshy masses begin erupting from her body. A quick and nasty video which clocks in at under two minutes.
6. “Mein Teil” by Rammstein – A group of men participate in a brutal fight in the mud, several men convulse in agony, and another man receives a blowjob from an angel before murdering her and chewing her feathers. Meanwhile, a proper lady eats chocolate and seems amused by the whole situation. What the hell is going on in Germany?!
5. “Obscure” by Dir En Grey – It’s not often you see a lead singer constantly throwing up on himself while singing. You get that, plus demon women and much more in this twisted little gem from Japan.
4. “The Owl” by I Love You But I’ve Chosen Darkness – A tethered crow tries to fly towards the light. Meanwhile, it’s mockingly watched by about the most evil-looking owl you could ever imagine. This one WILL give you nightmares.
3. “The Beautiful People” by Marilyn Manson – I don’t know what those giant freaks on stilts are supposed to be, but I guarantee that they’ll scare the crap out of you.
2. “Black Hole Sun” by Soundgarden – People’s faces twisted into grotesque shapes, a giant black storm, and a little girl spitting up ice cream. Lovecraft might’ve hated the music, but he would’ve loved the video.
1. “Come to Daddy” – Directed by Chris Cunningham, this nightmarish video has creepy children–who reminded me of the killer from Don’t Look Now–on a rampage and a tall mutated man emerging from a television set (a la Videodrome). Each disturbing creature has the singer’s face digitally applied over their own, making for a particularly bizarre viewing experience. The wailing electronic music only serves to enhance the mood.
