His career has dropped off in recent years, but there was a time when John Carpenter was one of the world’s leading horror directors. And on top of introducing the world to Michael Myers, Carpenter also successfully worked in the field of science-fiction. Until he makes a comeback, here’s a look at the Top 10 John Carpenter movies.
10. The Fog – There’s something lethal in the fog in this Carpenter film starring Jamie Lee Curtis, Adrienne Barbeau and Hal Holbrook.
9. They Live – Roddy Piper and Keith David pair up to take on a global conspiracy from beyond the stars. Features one of the greatest fight scenes in the history of cinema.
8. Assault on Precinct 13 – An early Carpenter work featuring the nail-biting siege of a police precinct. This film has inspired numerous clones and even a Hollywood remake.
7. Christine – Based on the novel by Stephen King, this classic features a demonic car that just won’t die.
6. Escape from New York – Kurt Russell plays Snake Plissken, a badass criminal and ex-soldier who must rescue the President of the United States from the prison island of Manhattan. Also stars Harry Dean Stanton, Isaac Hayes and Ernest Borgnine.
5. Prince of Darkness – A group of scientists assemble at a church to study a container of liquid found in the basement. As it turns out, that green, swirling liquid is actually Satan himself. Alice Cooper has a cameo.
4. Starman – In this touching Carpenter film, Jeff Bridges portrays an alien who slowly learns what it’s like to be human, thanks to Karen Allen.
3. Halloween – The movie which started the slasher craze of the ‘80s, Halloween features an unstoppable force of evil named Michael Myers. As he tries to kill his innocent relative, Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis), his gun-toting doctor (Donald Pleasence) is in hot pursuit.
2. Big Trouble in Little China – A box-office bomb turned cult classic, Big Trouble in Little China combines martial arts, magic, romance, comedy, and some really great special effects. Kurt Russell is delightful as the outlandishly macho Jack Burton.
1. The Thing – Yet another pairing of Kurt Russell and John Carpenter. This time around, Russell and company must try to survive in an Antarctic research station while a shape-shifting alien in on a killing spree. Also starring Wilford Brimley and Keith David.
