1992 was the year that Silence of the Lambs cleaned up at the Oscars, so it’s only appropriate that a number of solid horror movies were also released. In the list below, I rank the top 10 horror films of 1992. If you can think of any I’ve left out, don’t be shy in the comments section.

10. Innocent Blood – A female vampire only feeds on criminals. When she fails to kill a crime boss (played by Robert Loggia), he starts passing his new condition on to other criminals. Now the vampire must team up with a cop to stop the bloodsucking rampage.
9. Dust Devil – Set in South Africa, Dust Devil tells the story of a demon which takes human form and kills anyone it comes across. Interlocking stories introduce us to an abused wife, her husband, and an aging black cop. A non-traditional horror film, but also highly entertaining.
8. Dr. Giggles – The insane son of a doctor escapes from a mental asylum and returns to the town where his father died 35 years before. He goes on a killing spree, looking for the perfect heart with which to bring his dead mother back to life.
7. Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth – Pinhead is back, and this time he’s been trapped inside a pillar which winds up in a trendy nightclub. You know it won’t be long before he escapes and starts picking off club goers one by one.
6. The Untold Story – When body parts wash up on shore, the investigation leads back to a restaurant under new management. But the new owner has no proof of sale, which leads one to wonder where the former owner and his family disappeared to? This Hong Kong film is extremely gory, and it’s still banned in several countries. Based on a true story.
5. The Resurrected – A private eye is hired to look into the odd behavior of a woman’s husband. Turns out the husband has fallen in with the occult and started trying to raise the dead. Based on the works of H.P. Lovecraft.
4. Dead Alive - Peter Jackson directed this tale long before the Lord of the Rings trilogy. When an infected animal bites his mother, Lionel Cosgrove soon finds his hometown overrun with zombies. Completely over-the-top and filled with all sorts of bizarre scenes (including a lawnmower brandished as a weapon and a kung-fu priest).
3. Alien 3 – Sigourney Weaver returns as Ripley, and this time she’s crash-landed on a prison colony filled with murderers and rapists. But that’s the least of her problems, as a killer xenomorph has also arrived with her.
2. Candyman – A beautiful graduate student investigating urban legends comes into contact with the Candyman. Tony Todd plays the Candyman, a killer with a hook for a hand and a strange power of bees. An interesting film which spawned several sequels.
1. Bram Stoker’s Dracula – Directed by Francis Ford Coppola and starring Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder, Keanu Reeves, Anthony Hopkins and Cary Elwes. A slick, big-budget adaptation of the original Bram Stoker novel. Great visuals, and Hopkins is out of control as Van Helsing.
