Top 10 Most Underrated Horror Movies »

Ever wondered which horror films grossed the most money in the United States? Well, wonder no longer. In the following list, we’ll take a look at the top 10 grossing horror movies in the United States. Sadly, Shocker didn’t make the cut.
10. The Omen (1976) – Cute little Damien is actually the antichrist. A classic film starring Gregory Peck as the father who slowly comes to realize his son is the ultimate evil.
9. What Lies Beneath (2000) – Michelle Pfeiffer and Harrison Ford star in a tale about a haunted house. Ford gets to play against type in this one, and his performance is as good as you’d expect.
8. The Mummy (1999) – Brendan Frasier fights mummies, skeletons, and all manner of other Egyptian dangers in this throwback to the old Universal horror films.
7. Alien (1979) – The film that launched a franchise. Ellen Ripley and the crew of the Nostromo bring an alien lifeform aboard their ship, and the creature rapidly grows into a murderous engine of destruction.
6. The Amityville Horror (1979) – Based on the supposed true story of a family terrorized by evil spirits in their new home.
5. Jaws 2 (1978) – Roy Scheider is back to take on yet another killer shark in this sequel to the blockbuster Jaws.
4. The Mummy Returns (2001) – Brendan Frasier and Rachel Weisz return to once again combat the evil forces of an undead Egyptian priest. Plenty of action, with a few scares thrown in for good measure.
3. The Sixth Sense (1999) – “I see dead people” became a famous line thanks to this movie starring Bruce Willis as a psychologist trying to help a disturbed young boy. Major twist ending, which seems to have taken most people by surprise.
2. The Exorcist (1973) – When a young girl is possessed by Satan, it’s up to an old priest and a young priest to save her. Way ahead of its time, and the pea soup scene scared people senseless in the ‘70s.
1. Jaws (1975) – A massive shark preys on a seaside community, and the local sheriff (Roy Scheider) must find a way to stop the creature’s rampage. Enter a young shark expert (Richard Dreyfuss) and a salty shark hunter (Robert Shaw).
