Top 10 Ghost Movies

Ghost stories have been scaring people for centuries. The world is full of tales of spooky hauntings and creepy locations. If you are looking for a good scary flick involving the supernatural, try out one of these top ten ghost movies.

  1. The Blair Witch Project – Made on a shoestring budget using improve acting, it nevertheless became a huge success. A group of college kids making a documentary about a dead witch become lost in the woods. Although the witch is never revealed, the fact that you never see her makes it that much scarier.
  2. Poltergeist – A family moves into a house and soon discovers strange occurrences. Soon their young daughter disappears into the television. In the course of events, they discover that their home was built on an old cemetery whose bodies are still under the house.
  3. The Shining – This is the film that really made Jack Nicholson’s career. A writer ands his family house-sit for a resort during the off season. But the resort is haunted by ghosts and they manipulate the writer who begins to lose his sanity. The scene where he hacks his way through a door and declares “Here’s Johnny” is one of the most famous in cinematic history.
  4. The Sixth Sense – The ending of this movie caught everyone by surprise. A counselor tries to help a young boy who sees dead people. By the end, the counselor discovers a surprise of his own.
  5. The Amityville Horror – The original movie from 1979 is so much better than the remake. Based on supposedly ‘real’ events, a family moves into a house that turns out to be haunted. One of the most memorable moments was the walls bleeding and the disembodied voices shouting.
  6. Burnt Offerings – Another haunted house flick but one with a different twist. A family rents an old house and must care for the old woman upstairs. As more strange things begin to happen, the old house slowly rejuvenates itself until it looks like new.
  7. The Haunting – The original 1963 movie portrayed a group of supernatural investigators who visit an old mansion. One of the members, a young woman named Eleanor, becomes drawn to the mysterious house. Without special effects, this movie still managed to deliver scares due to sound effects and playing with shadows.
  8. The Grudge – The original Japanese film was so much better than the American remake. In it, a nurse becomes exposed to a curse. The curse caused the person to become enraged and when they die, it passed on to a new victim.
  9. The Ring – One of the best ghost movies ever put on film and one that brought attention to Japanese horror flicks. There is a tape that will kill anyone who watches it within a week. It turns out the tape contains the vengeful ghost of a murdered girl.
  10. The Others – Finally a movie that gives a reason for all the dark corridors. A woman and her two photosensitive children move into an old house in the country. The movie has a huge twist where you find out that the ghosts are not who you think they are.
