Top 10 Vampire Television Series »

Normally, Best Horror provides five Top 10 lists per week, but I thought I would make an exception upon hearing the news of David Carradine’s passing at the age of 72. While he wasn’t what you’d call a “horror actor,” Carradine did appear in a number of scary movies (as did his father, John Carradine). Below, I have put together a list of the Top 10 David Carradine films, regardless of genre. Below that, you can watch Carradine performing a song from the 1992 film Roadside Prophets. Rest in peace, Grasshopper.
10. Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat – A peaceful group of vampires try living in the desert, but they’re hunted down by other bloodsuckers who don’t approve of their lifestyle change. Carradine stars as Jozek Mardulak.
9. Lone Wolf McQuade – Carradine plays Rawley Wilkes, an illegal arms merchant who’s also an expert in the martial arts. Since Chuck Norris is the hero of the film, you can smell a karate showdown coming from a mile away.
8. The Serpent’s Egg – Carradine plays an out-of-work circus acrobat living in Berlin after WWI. His brother commits suicide, and the kindly doctor who gives him a job may not be as harmless as he seems.
7. Q – Carradine and Richard Roundtree are detectives investigating a series of mysterious deaths in New York. Little do they know that the Aztec god Quetzalcoatl has been resurrected by a cult.
6. Gray Lady Down – Carradine plays an unconventional naval man who must assist with the rescue of a submarine resting precariously on a canyon ledge under the ocean. Also stars Charlton Heston and Stacy Keach.
5. Kill Bill Vol 2 – The Bride continues her quest for revenge. Her ultimate goal is the deadly assassin named Bill (Carradine), who also happens to be her former lover. Lots of kung-fu action in this one, and Carradine gets to have a climatic battle with Uma Thurman.
4. The Long Riders – David portrays Cole Younger alongside brothers Keith (Jim Younger) and Robert (Bob Younger). Also stars the Guest, Quaid and Keach brothers in this tale about Jesse James.
3. Kill Bill Vol 1 – The beginning of The Bride’s bloody revenge spree. Carradine is heard but not seen. Amazing battle at the House of Blue Leaves.
2. Death Race 2000 – Frankenstein (Carradine) is the most popular driver in a transcontinental road race where extra points are earned for running over civilians. A cult classic featuring a young Sylvester Stallone and plenty of blood-on-the-asphalt action.
1. Bound for Glory – This 1976 biographical film features Carradine as folk singer Woody Guthrie. He received award nominations from the New York Film Critics Circle, The Golden Globes, and the National Board of Review.
