Over the years, movies featuring crazed animals have captured the imagination of moviegoers. The popularity of these films comes and goes, but they were especially big in the 1970s. Just in case you want to experience some of these films for yourself, here’s a list of the Top 10 animals gone wild movies.
10. Grizzly – A rip-off of Jaws, an 18 foot grizzly bear terrorizes a national forest and really racks up the kills. In fact, they eventually have to bring in a bazooka to bring the sucker down! Now that’s one tough bear.
9. Night of the Lepus – It doesn’t get any more campy than this, but the film’s still a lot of fun. Giant rabbits terrorize a town, and it’s up to the likes of DeForest Kelley to save the day.
8. Alligator – A pet alligator named Ramon gets flushed into the sewers and grows into a 35-foot-long killer. It’s great fun when Ramon goes berserk at a fancy dinner party hosted by the elite of the city.
7. Black Sheep – Killer sheep run amok in this 2007 New Zealand horror/comedy. This is one that’s gotta be seen to be believed.
6. Cujo – A rabid dog begins killing the locals in this movie adaptation of the Stephen King novel. He eventually corners a mother and child in their car, and a desperate struggle for survival begins.
5. Anaconda – A giant snake is loose in the Amazon, and the slimy John Voight wants to catch it for big bucks. He’s willing to use his co-stars, including Jennifer Lopez, Owen Wilson and Ice Cube, as bait.
4. Willard – A lonely young man develops a rather unique friendship with the local rat population. The smartest rat is named Socrates, while Ben is a giant rat with a mean streak.
3. Arachnophobia – Deadly spiders are on the loose in a small California town. Excellent mix of horror and comedy, with a quality cast including John Goodman, Julian Sands, and Jeff Daniels.
2. The Birds – Alfred Hitchcock directs this masterful film about a small town which experiences a rash of bird attacks. Starring Tippi Hedren, Rod Taylor, Jessica Tandy, Suzanne Pleshette and Veronica Cartwright. This one is an absolute must-see.
1. Jaws – The king of all killer animal movies, Jaws also happens to be one of the greatest films ever made. Directed by Steven Spielberg, it tells the story of a killer shark which terrorizes an otherwise peaceful town, and the brave group of men which sets of in pursuit (including Richard Dreyfuss, Robert Shaw and Roy Scheider). Robert Shaw gives perhaps the greatest speech in movie history.
