Top Ten Preacher Characters
Garth Ennis created one of the most memorable and unique comic book characters with the launch of Preacher back in 1995 through DC’s Vertigo line. The book’s hard-hitting take on religion, coupled with the supernatural, made it a hit with fans. The series boasted a large number of characters but this list of the top ten Preacher characters includes the main cast.
- Jesse Custer – As a washed-up small town preacher, Jesse becomes possessed with the supernatural entity known as Genesis. Giving him the ability to command anyone to do anything he says, the power rivals that of God. The main story follows Jesse’s travels as he searches for God who has abandoned Heaven.
- Tulip O’Hare – Jesse’s girlfriend and one tough girl. As the ultimate tomboy, she can shoot, hunt, fish, and drink beer like one of the guys. She even dies once but God intervenes because hey, every comic book needs a hot chick.
- Cassidy – An Irish vampire and one of Jesse’s close companions. He fights his own addictions to drugs, alcohol, and blood (he actually prefers beer and whiskey to blood). Although he is a friend, he later proves unreliable and causes some trouble for Jesse and Tulip.
- Saint of Killers – The impervious saint of killing and slaughter, he is unstoppable. Sent to Earth by the Angel of death to collect souls, his only purpose is killing and he is not picky about who he puts down. He is such a bad ass, he even kills the Devil and later sits on God’s throne.
- Herr Star – As a member of the secret religious group known as the Grail, Starr is the story’s main antagonist. He murders his way to the top of the Grail because he wants to replace the current deformed Messiah with Jesse Custer. Eventually, due to many injuries and failures to capture Jesse, he sinks into a rage and tries to kill Jesse.
- The Duke – The Duke is Jesse’s imaginary friend. He resembles John Wayne and has been with Jesse since his parents died. Duke is responsible for giving Jesse information that he normally wouldn’t have access to.
- Arseface – The name says it all. As a boy who idolized Kurt Cobain, he tried to commit suicide with a shotgun but instead disfigured himself. He later blames Jesse for his father’s death and travels across the country to hunt him down.
- Marie L’Angelle – Jesse’s grandmother is one mean old hag. She tries to control Jesse by any means necessary, including locking him in a coffin for a month. Bound to a wheelchair, her two enforcers, Jody and T.C. do all of her dirty work.
- Genesis – The supernatural entity that resides in Jesse Custer. It is the result of an angel and a demon getting it on. Neither good nor evil, it has all the memories of Heaven and Hell and the attitude of an infant.
- Christina – Jesse’s mother who, for a long time, he believed to be dead. He saw her dragged off by Jody but she managed to escape, losing an arm in the process. Later on, after she contracts amnesia, she believes her name is Jodie.
