Top Ten Comic Book Slayers of the Supernatural
Not all horror comics are about bad guys doing bad things. Several titles feature characters that fight to hold back the things of the night, hunting them down and slaying them. The comic book world contains a whole slew of nastiness but this list of the top ten comic book slayers of the supernatural mentions the people able to take the darkness down.
- Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter – Anita got her start in Laurell K. Hamilton’s novels before she was adapted for comic books. She is a necromancer able to bring back the dead for questioning. A dedicated cop, she isn’t about to let something trivial like vampires and werewolves get in her way.
- Blade – Marvel’s vampire hunter sports a lot of cool weaponry and gadgets. As a hybrid, he is perfect for fighting the bloodsucking plague. He just has to control his own thirst.
- Buffy: The Vampire Slayer – Buffy is just about the cutest vampire slayer we’ve ever laid eyes on. She could also probably kick our tail. Buffy Season 8 continues where the television series left off.
- Hellblazer – John Constantine is something of a practitioner of magic and walks in the supernatural side of our world. While not exactly a law-abiding citizen, he still tries to do the right thing. This often results in his getting deeper into trouble.
- Hellboy – The devilish monkey-boy Hellboy was raised to love and respect mankind. As a paranormal investigator for the government, he takes on all manner of supernatural nasties. The series even spawned two movies with the wise-cracking Ron Perlman.
- Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense – The success of Hellboy helped to create this spin-off series. Also known as the B.P.R.D., it follows the adventures of the other members of the secretive government department such as Abe Sapien. While the book Hellboy mostly concentrates on the main character, B.P.R.D. is more of a team book.
- Witchblade – Sara Pezzini and Dani Baptiste are two of the latest holders of the powerful witchblade. While the cool gauntlet gives the wielder awesome powers, it also attracts its share of unwanted attention, especially from the supernatural world. It also makes its wielders look incredibly hot.
- Cassie Hack – From the series Hack/Slash, she is another hot chick but not one you would make a pass at. She spends her days and nights hunting down ‘slashers’, beings who are not completely human and who are filled with a killing rage. Plus, she has her hulking companion Vlad to back her up.
- Nocturnals – A group of monsters and freaks led by Doc Horror fight supernatural menaces in their California town. They included such characters as an undead gunfighter, a ghost, and a reptile-man. Pretty similar to Hellboy but more on the pulp fiction side.
- Supernatural: Origins – Based on the popular television series of the same name. It follows the travels of the Winchester brothers as they take their revenge on the supernatural. A really good adaptation of the tv show.
