10. The Doll Who Ate His Mother – Campbell’s first novel, it’s also one of the most disturbing of the bunch. Clare Frayn nearly hits a man one night while giving her brother a ride home. Her brother is killed, and they never find his arm. Strangely, Clare seems to remember the man who caused the accident disappeaing into the darkness with an extra arm. Later, she teams up with a journalist to track down this nutcase. Big mistake.
9. The Face That Must Die – A man named Horridge claims to know the identity of the serial killer who’s been preying on gay men in a suburb of Liverpool. When he decided to confront the killer, things start to get more than a little strange. The most recent edition of this novel included an introduction by Poppy Z. Brite.
8. Midnight Sun – After his grandfather freezes to death and his parents die under mysterious circumstances, an author of children’s books returns to his hometown. What he finds is an alien being intent on possessing him and devouring humanity.
7. The Parasite – After playing with a Ouija board, a 10-year-old child disappears into thin air. Twenty years later, a woman named Rose Tierney finds that she has psychic powers, including seeing into the future and traveling the astral plane. But what will she do when she’s menaced by a malevolent entity from beyond our world?
6. The Influence – A spiteful old woman returns from the dead in the body of a young girl. She uses said body to corrupt and kidnap her grand-niece, eventually turning her into something that’s not quite human.
5. The Long Lost – A couple finds an old woman barely alive on the outskirts of a Welsh village and takes her home with them. As the woman slowly regains her strength, all those around her seem to be meeting unfortunate ends.
4. Incarnate – While taking part in a dream experiment, a group of test subjects experience a single, horrible vision. Eleven years later, the members of the group begin to have dreams of a nightmarish future.
3. The Hungry Moon – A right-wing Christian from America tries to stamp out the Druid rituals of a small English town. When he and his followers accidentally awaken an ancient god, all hell breaks loose.
2. Ancient Images – In this Ramsey Campbell book, it seems that Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi made a horror film together in 1938, but the movie never saw the light of day. When a film editor decides to go looking for the lost movie, her search reveals blood sacrifices, terrifying creatures, and other assorted horrors.
1. Nazareth Hill – A teenage girl slowly begins to uncover the truth about the apartment building where she lives with her father. As it turns out, the place was used as a prison and torture chamber for those accused of being witches. Events begin to intensify, and she and her father are soon trapped in a reenactment of the bloody events which took place on Nazareth Hill.
